Buffy the Vampire Slayer celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The popular Sarah Michelle Gellar-starring series is about to bring the nostalgia back to cable after finding a new home on the Latinx-owned Fuse. The channel, which is run by Fuse Media, used to be primarily dedicated to music but has since begun branching out to include “empowering multicultural content”, and it will be adding the 7 season run of Buffy The Vampire Slayer to that content starting on October 1st, 2022.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer became a cultural phenomenon of the late 1990s, and made stars of its young cast which alongside Gellar in the title role included David Boreanaz, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, James Marsters and Seth Green, as well as Anthony Stewart Head as the ever dependable Giles. Based on the 1992 movie of the same name, which starred Kristy Swanson as the vampire slayer, the show ran for seven seasons and led to the spin-off series Angel, which focussed on Boreanaz’s vampire, as well as numerous books, comics and video games.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Has Had Recent Press, Thanks Its Joss Whedon Connection

In the press release put out by Fuse announcing the arrival of Buffy to its upcoming content list, Joss Whedon’s name was not mentioned anywhere as shows and movies linked to the director continue to put distance between them. After making headlines when accusations of misconduct surfaced around the shooting of Justice League, and in particular, the director’s attitude toward stars Ray Fisher and Gal Gadot, members of the original Buffy cast, including Charisma Carpenter, backed up claims about Whedon’s behavior on set.

The series has also been criticized in recent years for its lack of diversity in the cast, who were predominantly white actors, although the series did include two characters, Willow and Tara, who would become a couple in the series and be a prominent lesbian pairing at a time when such a thing was not often seen in mainstream programming. While much of the outdated content of the show was of the time, overall, the series has not aged as badly as some, and continues to be massively popular now after 25 years. Its return to syndication will help the series find a new audience once again, and who knows, someday we may see a new iteration of the slayer putting a modern twist on the series.
