A handful of new images provide our first look at Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter in the upcoming Orphan Black sequel-slash-spinoff series, Orphan Black: Echoes. Released courtesy of the official Twitter account for Orphan Black, the images also reveal our first look at Line of Duty, Bodyguard, and The Midwich Cuckoos star Keeley Hawes in the series, which is expected to land on AMC and AMC+ next year. Check out the first look at Orphan Black: Echoes below.
The original Orphan Black series first aired back in 2013, running for five seasons and concluding in 2017. Led by She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black begins when her character, Sarah Manning, spots someone who looks uncomfortably like her. She soon discovers that she is one of several genetically identical human clones, with the series tackling issues surrounding the moral and ethical implications of human cloning and its effect on one’s identity.
Orphan Black was met with critical acclaim throughout its run, with Maslany, in particular, receiving praise for her multiple roles, which earned her plenty of awards and nominations, including a Primetime Emmy Award, two Critics’ Choice Television Awards, and much more.
Orphan Black: Echoes Follows a Group of Women Who Uncover a Story of Love & Betrayal
AMC
Orphan Black: Echoes, meanwhile, has been described as neither a “spinoff or reboot of the original series, but rather a completely new story set in the same world." The series (which is sort of a spinoff) will be “set in the near future, the new Orphan Black takes a deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence. It follows a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives and embark on a thrilling journey, unraveling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal.”
Those women who will be interwoven include Jessica Jones and Breaking Bad star Krysten Ritter, and It’s a Sin actress Keeley Hawes. While details of their roles remain unknown at this time, it looks like Ritter will once again demonstrate her affinity for action as she sports a beaten and bloody face in the new images, with Hawes looking to be adopting something of a therapist-type role with a notepad in hand.
Orphan Black co-creator John Fawcett is returning as a director and executive producer on Orphan Black: Echoes, with Anna Fishko being the sequel series’ creator and showrunner.
Produced by Temple Street Productions in association with AMC Networks, Orphan Black: Echoes was picked up for a series order back in April. The sequel series is expected to premiere sometime in mid-2023.
