The recent hit Our Flag Means Death has quickly grown a huge fanbase, and audiences are reeling with excitement now that the show has been confirmed for a second season. Viewers are eager to have questions from the season one finale answered and excited to see where the show goes next.
While this delightful comedy is not entirely historically accurate, it does feature characters based on real pirates from the golden age of piracy. Besides the leading man of Stede Bonnet, the show also gave us the iconic Blackbeard and an appearance of Will Arnett as Calico Jack. The latter two are fairly iconic names for anyone who is interested in piracy, but they were by no means the only big players at the time.

As the show continues on, there’s the possibility of the crew aboard The Revenge meeting some other famous pirates.
Anne Bonny’s Fierceness Would Be a Great Fit
Starz
One of the few known female pirates is Anne Bonny, who lived quite a life on the open seas. She would fit perfectly into the show since she already has a connection to one of the characters – Calico Jack. Anne became his partner and lover aboard his ship after leaving her husband behind.

She was an incredible pirate known for her ferocity, even killing and throwing overboard any men that challenged her. But while Anne was partner in crime to Jack, she also had her close companion Mary Read aboard the ship. Anne and Mary both wore disguises around the crew to hide the fact that they were women and formed a tight bond during their adventures together with Jack. While little is known for certain about the nature of the relationship between Anne and Mary, many like to speculate that their bond was more than just solidarity in womanhood.
Anne Bonny has the ferocity to match the other characters in Our Flag Means Death and could easily be written as another queer character for the show. Everyone loves a strong female character in action, and Anne Bonny is ripe with potential.
Bartholomew Roberts Combines Charm and Bloodlust
Ubisoft
This ferocious pirate is regarded as one of the most successful and prolific during the golden age of piracy and has inspired characters and recreations in a lot of media, everything from The Princess Bride to Assassin’s Creed.
His crew was incredibly loyal and thought of their captain as “pistol proof. They were willing to follow him into any battle, knowing that his cunning and ferocity would lead them to victory. Bartholomew’s skills and crew rival even the skills of Blackbeard, which could make him either an incredible ally or an exceptional adversary in the upcoming season now that Blackbeard is back to his dark and murderous ways.

Bartholomew could also, surprisingly, add a bit of funny charm if he were to make an appearance because of the flags on his ship. While he ended up making some famous pirate flag designs (such as the skull and cutlass), he had some earlier designs that were not quite as intimidating, mirroring the struggle to find a design that the crew of The Revenge were dealing with. One of the more ridiculous designs was a man holding a flaming sword while standing on two skulls.
Bartholomew’s flair for dramatics and his intense bloodlust would make him a riveting addition to the show that viewers would definitely be enraptured by.
Benjamin Hornigold Is Blackbeard’s Mentor
Known mostly for founding the Republic of Pirates, Benjamin Hornigold was a skilled sailor and successful pirate with one of the most heavily armed ships on the seas. He had an incredible number of successful sieges and lootings but was also a man of honor. Benjamin looked after his crew and didn’t kill others without cause.
He would make a riveting addition to the story of Our Flag Means Death because of his connection to Edward Teach, who Benjamin had as his second in command for several years before he went off to become Blackbeard. Having an old mentor return in the show would be a compelling conflict to see on screen, especially because Benjamin, much like Stede and Blackbeard in the season one finale, was captured and given a pardon for his piracy as long as he reformed himself. Benjamin not only did that but became a pirate hunter to collect rewards from King George. Having Blackbeard’s old mentor come to hunt him down would create an interesting and dramatic challenge for the characters to face.
There’s no shortage of interesting pirate content out there, but HBO Max has outdone themselves with this series. With the first season becoming so successful, there’s no telling where the story might go. And with the creative freedom to have fun twists on history, much like Hulu’s The Great, which is getting a third season, they can create some fascinating tales and characters with some inspiration from real-life pirates. It could all lead to hilarity or drama depending on who the writers decide to have make an appearance in the second season, but audiences can’t wait to see who the crew of The Revenge crosses paths with next.
