Premiering back in August 2014, Outlander quickly became a huge hit for STARZ, earning multiple Golden Globe nominations for its first season. Audiences flocked to the show in droves and quickly coined the term “droutlander,” which fans use to describe the time between seasons. Thankfully, the current droutlander is almost over as the series is set to return later this summer. The newest season is slated for 16 episodes, the most of any prior season excluding Season 1. With a shortened Season 6 due to pandemic restrictions, viewers were left desperately yearning for more. Responsively, the show is making up for lost episodes and giving viewers more of what they want.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Audiences last saw Jamie and Claire unwillingly separated following the murder of Malva Christie and her unborn baby. Given the circumstances of Malva’s death, Claire was quickly assumed to be the culprit despite the facts. After a shootout between the Frasers and Richard Brown’s “Committee of Safety,” Claire eventually relents and agrees to go with the group to Wilmington for a trail. To ensure her safety along the way as well as a fair trial, Jaime and Tom Christie accompany the group.
However, the situation quickly goes awry, and Jamie is forcibly taken away on Brown’s orders halfway through their journey. Rather than follow Jamie, Tom stays with Claire knowing that without him, Brown’s men would surely kill her. With Claire in jail and alone, fans are left to wonder about her fate. Thankfully, the wait is almost over as STARZ announced the series will return later this year.
Outlander Season 7: The Plot
Outlander is based on a series of books, and the newest season will follow events in the seventh book by Diana Gabaldon, An Echo in the Bone. Given the previous season’s cliffhanger, Season 7 will likely pick up exactly where Season 6 ended. As Claire faces the gallows, it’s all but guaranteed she won’t meet death despite the noose around her neck in the show’s teaser trailer. Somehow, she’ll be saved, after which she and Jamie will face other obstacles during their time at Fraser’s Ridge. Bree and Roger will welcome a new baby in Season 7 and are likely to learn something that will force them to rethink their time at the Ridge.
A major aspect of Season 7 fans can expect is the American Revolution. The war has been slowly building since Jamie and Claire washed ashore in America back in Season 4, and the upcoming season is likely to see the powder keg finally explode. Claire and Jamie already know how the revolution ends which will affect how they approach the war. However, characters such as Lord Grey and William, Jaime’s secret son, will be filled with patriotic vigor for the British throughout the season, which will put Jamie at odds with the people he loves. As a result, multiple storylines will converge against the backdrop of the war, putting many characters in precarious situations as viewers watch those dynamics playout on the small screen.
Outlander Season 7: The Cast
Sony Pictures Television
The main cast will be returning in Season 7 of Outlander including Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, at the helm of the entire series, as Jamie and Claire Fraser. Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin will also be reprising their roles as Bree and Roger MacKenzie. John Bell is returning as Young Ian and David Berry will return as Lord John Grey. Caitlin O’Ryan is coming back as Lizzie, while Paul Gorman will return as both Josiah and Keziah Beardsley. Alexander Vlahos is coming back as Allan Christie and Mark Lewis Jones is returning as Tom Christie as everyone faces the aftermath of Malva’s murder.
The show will also introduce some new faces as brand-new characters are slated to join the series. Charles Vandervaart has been cast to play William Ransom, Jamie’s secret son who is now a grown British soldier. Joey Phillips will play a doctor by the name of Denzell Hunter alongside Izzy Meikle-Small who is set to play his sister Rachel Hunter, which might be a possible love interest for Young Ian. They are described as Quakers who are introduced into the world of Outlander after Ian brings an injured William Ransom to their farm.
Unfortunately, it’s unlikely fans will see the return of César Domboy and Lauren Lyle as Fergus and Marsali Fraser, respectively, since they left Fraser’s Ridge without any indication of returning. Plus, the two actors have not been seen in any behind-the-scenes footage of the series while filming on location in Scotland.
