A new feature film is in development based on the life of late sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the new movie, called Only Apparently Real, is being produced by Jon Shestack. The film is based in part on a biography of the same name penned by Paul Williams, a friend of Dick’s who had served as executor of the author’s estate. Former attorney Michael Richter wrote the script for the feature film adaptation and will also produce alongside Shestack....

AMC today announced that it has renewed its cinematic and critically acclaimed supernatural series Preacher for an expanded 13-episode second season, slated for 2017. The Sony Pictures Television-AMC Studios co-production is the #2 new series on cable this year among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 and is currently averaging 3.3 million viewers per episode, including 1.9 million adults 25-54, in Nielsen live+3 ratings. Said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios....

USA Network and Universal Cable Productions (UCP) have an early holiday present for fans of their hit series Psych. Fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best friend, Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill), will team up once again, returning to USA for the holidays, when the two-hour Psych: The Movie premieres in December 2017. Psych creator Steve Franks co-wrote the movie with Roday and will also direct the special....

TBS has given the greenlight to the character-driven police comedy Angie Tribeca (working title), the brainchild of Steve Carell and Nancy Carell. Rashida Jones (The Office, Parks and Recreation) stars in the satirical look at police procedurals, along with Jere Burns (Justified, Dear John), Deon Cole (Conan, Funny Business) and Andree Vermeulen (Laid Off, NTSF:SD:SUV::). Angie Tribeca is being executive-produced by Steve Carell and Nancy Carell through their Carousel Television, along with Campbell Smith (The Daily Show) and Thom Hinkle (Thom Hinkle)....

The six Resident Evil films starring Milla Jovovich comprise simultaneously one of the most successful and most mocked video game film adaptations ever made. For fans, it feels like no one can ever do the series justice. But while the video game series has been able to reimagine itself and regain its past glory, the film adaptations haven’t been so lucky. The final Milla Jovovich film, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter came out in 2017, the same year Resident Evil 7: Biohazard revitalized the game series....

Ridley Scott is the latest in a growing line of big-name directors to denounce the superhero movie genre, with the filmmaker behind Blade Runner and Gladiator unloading both barrels as he describes comic book outings as, not just boring, but “boring as sh-t.” In a recent interview with Deadline, Scott did not hold back when criticising the hugely popular genre, chastising them for lacking in characterisation and, well, failing to entertain....

News from the world of Iron Man 2 seems to be everywhere now, so when star Robert Downey Jr. was discussing his film The Soloist, it’s only natural that questions about the sequel to Iron Man arose. Our friends at Collider had the chance to sit in on that roundtable interview, and they managed to get some hints about Iron Man 2 answered. One thing that Downey did say was that he was taking Iron Man 2 more seriously than anything else he had ever done - which he himself acknowledges as being ridiculous....

The upcoming film in the Cloverfield franchise, currently being developed by Paramount, has been teased by the original Cloverfield director Matt Reeves. While he has been tight-lipped about potential spoilers for the film, he has hinted that one potential route for the sequel could be a viral horror film inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with SyFy on the 15th anniversary of the original movie, Reeves reflected that the idea of “the uncertainty of what you can’t see and the idea that being next to someone, you could catch something” could be a very scary vein for the sequel film to follow....

The MCU’s latest series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has already premiered on Disney+. Starring Tatiana Maslandy, She-Hulk is a Fleabag-inspired comedy miniseries and marks the titular character’s MCU debut. The show has so far received mixed reviews among critics and audiences alike, which is evident in its polarized ratings (52% on Rotten Tomatoes). The dwindling ratings have landed She-Hulk among the least favorite spot of Marvel outings, Inhumans (2017) being at the bottom....

Metallica - one of, if not the most popular heavy metal bands in the world - has historically been very protective of their music rights but has been lightening up in recent years. Most notably, the band allowed the use of their song “Master of Puppets” on the season four finale of the sci-fi Netflix series Stranger Things, which premiered earlier this year. Marvel fans are always on the lookout for the next connection in MCU movies and TV series, and despite Moon Knight seeming to be the most stand-alone entry in the franchise of Phase 4 there has been one aspect of the show that could well connect to Thor: Love and Thunder thanks to a shared connection around gods. In a story from The Hollywood Reporter it looks like Morgan Creek is suing Amaru Entertainment which owns the estate of Tupac Shakur. Morgan Creek, which is owned by Rick Nicita has brought legal proceedings against the company run by Afeni Shakur, Tupac’s mother and executor. The company claims in a Los Angeles Superior Court filing that Amaru pulled out of their agreement “to sell his life rights for a film adaptation....

What makes a movie “good”? Groundbreaking craft? Complex characters? The simple ability to entertain? Ask eight people to define a good movie, and you will get eight different answers. The mental processes that result in the thumbs up or down verdict are defined by complex factors, both personal (i.e., individual taste) and social/institutional (i.e. the established criteria). Despite the ever-expanding film canon and the numerical verdicts of Rotten Tomatoes, there is no fixed formula to separate a good film from a bad one....

The idea for the critically acclaimed 1993 film Naked came when director Mike Leigh was still young and attending primary school.
