A vital name behind the classic Rankin/Bass specials has passed away. According to Deadline, the stepdaughter of Paul Coker Jr. has confirmed his passing at 93. Coker was an illustrator whose work has expanded from magazines to television, but his most widely known contributions were to the classic stop-motion specials. Coker began studying drawing and painting at the University of Kansas, afterward landing a job designing Hallmark greeting cards in the 1950s....

Peter Segal has found a new home for his films for the next three years. According to Variety, Segal and his Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing have signed a three-year first-look deal with Warner Bros. The first film out of the deal will be Liam McBain: International Tennis Star and Proper English Geezer, which was written by Chip Hall and centers on the tumultuous journey of the rise, fall and comeback of an 80s British tennis star....
It seems like Disney is looking to double dip at the expense of consumers with the eventual release of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest DVD. From the outlandishness of “Crazy Lips” to the sheer creepiness of “Ju-On: The Grudge”, they’ve run the gamut on bizarrity in fiction. Now they’ve decided to up the ante with “The Fuccons”, a tremendously popular short show that premiered on something called “Vermilion Pleasure Night.” Which is interesting. Let’s remember way back to the depths of the nineties to a little show called “The Simpsons”....
Ricky Gervais will take on the starring role in This Side of the Truth, according to Variety. Gervais had committed to co-direct the comedy with his co-writer Matt Robinson, which begins shooting this spring. The film marks Gervais’ feature directing debut and first major project since wrapping the HBO series Extras, which begins its third season on December 18. Gervais is nominated for four Emmys for the comedy. This Side of the Truth is set in a contemporary world where no one has ever lied....
Following yesterday’s news that Molly Ringwald has signed on for a recurring role as Archie Andrews’ (KJ Apa) mother, The CW has released a new poster and photos from Riverdale. The poster features Archie Andrews at a local diner, seated with Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart). Outside the diner we also see Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch). If the poster wasn’t enough, we also have photos that feature Marisol Nichols as Veronica’s mother Hermione, Josie in action as part of her band Josie and the Pussycats, and Luke Perry as Archie’s father, Fred Andrews....
Robert Downey Jr. is in negotiations to star in DreamWorks/Universal’s Cowboys & Aliens, a pulpy mix of the sci-fi and Western genres that could serve as a potential 2010 tentpole. Imagine Entertainment partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are producing, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cowboys & Aliens derives from a graphic novel written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley from an original idea by Rosenberg. The story centers on an Old West battle between the Apache and Western settlers, including a former Union Army gunslinger named Zeke Jackson (Downey), that is interrupted by a spaceship crashing into the prairie near Silver City, Ariz....
M. Night Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital have joined forces to create the Night Chronicles, which will see one thriller made per year for the next three years. According to Variety, Shyamalan will produce and write the films, but he will choose a different director for each one. This will be the first time the director has produced something he has written without actually directing it himself. While he will create the stories and ideas to be used in the thriller, the chosen director will have to come up with a finished screenplay on his own....
Horror movies don’t always set the box office alight, and new Universal and Blumhouse collaboration M3GAN seemed certain to suffer with Avatar: The Way of Water still taking up a sizable chuck of cinema space right now. However, the film’s opening this weekend looks set to be an unexpected hit, with a predicted $17-$20 million box office that would see the movie make back its production cost and more besides....
Mad Max: Fury Road producer and first assistant director, P. J. Voeten, has once again confirmed that Chris Hemsworth will play the villain in the upcoming post-apocalyptic prequel, Furiosa. Revealed in the behind-the-scenes book “Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road,” by Kyle Buchanan, Voeten states that Furiosa will find the Hollywood heartthrob playing against type and that the prequel will introduce younger versions of characters from Mad Max’s past....
The Magnum P.I. reboot was picked up by NBC for two more seasons after Fox had canceled the series, and series star Jay Hernandez says this is all thanks to the fans for putting in so much effort to save the series. Columbia Pictures and Michael Mann have entered the race against Warner Bros. and Johnny Depp to mount a film about Alexander “Sasha” Litvinenko, the ex-KGB agent who was fatally poisoned, according to Variety. Based on a proposal and a sample chapter, Columbia paid $500,000 against $1.5 million early Friday for the screen rights to Death of a Dissident, a book Alex Goldfarb and the subject’s widow, Marina Litvinenko, are co-writing. Simon & Schuster subsidiary Free Press will publish the book in late May....
Microsoft may be behind in a lot of ways but they are fast on the heels of iTunes (sort of) in terms of downloading. In a story from Variety, apparently Microsoft’s Xbox Live is having better luck than most in penetrating this new ancillary avenue. Due to “Xbox 360’s direct connection to a TV and the console’s focus on HD content, Microsoft can deliver both. Though exact sales figures aren’t available from any Web site or studio, insiders agree that it’s the most, and maybe only, positive story in digital movie downloads this year....
