Nominations for the 78th Annual Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 31) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis and Oscar®-winner Mira Sorvino. Ganis and Sorvino, who won her Academy Award in 1995 for her supporting role in “Mighty Aphrodite,” announced ten of the 24 categories live at a 5:30 a.m. news conference attended by over 430 international media. Nominations in all categories then were distributed to news media in attendance and via the Internet on the official Academy Awards Web site �" www....

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-nominated director David Fincher and the Torso project he was set to make have apparently parted company. This is a project Paramount was looking to make since January 2006. The studio recently let the rights to the property lapse. Torso is a graphic novel that was written by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Andreyko. The novel tells the “true story of Treasury Department agent Eliot Ness’ time after his Al Capone days....

The Dwayne Johnson movie Black Adam will mark the first time Pierce Brosnan has suited up as a superhero for a comic book film, but it could have happened decades ago with the Dark Knight. In a recent interview on The Tonight Show, Brosnan spoke with Jimmy Fallon about his first foray into the superhero genre. The conversation led to Brosnan commenting on how he was up for Batman in the 1980s, though his audition didn’t exactly turn out well....

Pretty Little Liars is coming back with a reboot series on HBO Max. This time it will be called Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. It is said that this new show’s storyline will take place two decades after the original series’ ending. The original show, Pretty Little Liars, which aired from 2010 to 2017 on Freeform, starred Shay Mitchell, Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, and Troian Bellisario. The reboot series, created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, was announced that it was officially in the works on September 2, 2020, and after a few weeks, on September 24th, it was announced that the new series would stream on HBO Max....

Two films in preproduction have been halted due to the on-going writers’ strike. According to Variety, Warner Brothers has halted their upcoming adaptation of Gregory David Roberts novel Shantaram which was set to star Johnny Depp. And the Weinstein Company has postponed shooting on Rob Marshall’s musical Nine. The delays are due to the fact that the scripts weren’t yet finalized. Ron Howard’s The Da Vinci Code sequel Angels and Demons, and Oliver Stone’s Pinkville were also postponed for the same reason....

The producer of one of last year’s biggest comic book movies is going back into the genre once more. Variety is reporting that Watchmen producer Lloyd Levin has acquired the rights to the comic book series Mage. The series was created by Matt Wagner, which is a reimagined version of the Camelot legend. The story centers on Kevin Matchstick, a troubled young man who learns he possesses special powers and, with the aid of an enchanted baseball bat, seeks out to vanquish the evil plans of the Umbra Sprite....

Mandate Pictures is taking off with a new biopic for its latest project. According to Variety, Madate Pictures and Steve Zallian are teaming up on the biopic, My Dinner With Herve. The film will center on Fantasy Island’s Herve Villechaize, who portrayed the popular Tatoo character on the hit series. The biopic will be written and directed by Sacha Gervasi, who conducted the last interview with Villechaize, who portrayed the cult icon Tatoo on Fantasy Island, days before the actor committed suicide....

China has recently decided to lift its censorship of Marvel movies, allowing Disney and the MCU to expand into the world’s second-largest theatrical market. Good news for them, but it comes with a big caveat that will affect the day-to-day Marvel fan. Given China’s erratic taste for censorship, Disney will have to watch their step if they want to prevent a wholesale ban from happening again. And this means we might start seeing MCU movies made specifically to pass the Chinese censors....

Anchor Bay has some Masters Of Horror news on their minds! In a story from Fangoria, it looks like Anchor Bay has picked September 18 to bring out Masters of Horror: The Washingtonians! Synopsis: Brought to us by The Changeling director, Peter Medak, this film is actually an adaptation of a Bentley Little story and it concerns what happens to a man who finds out about some of founding fathers dark secrets....

It was reported yesterday that Ron Howard said that the film version of Arrested Development is moving forward, and it appears they finally locked in the final holdout in the cast. E! Online is reporting that Michael Cera will finally be joining the Arrested Development film. The site is also reporting that the movie may go into production by the end of the year, with series creator Mitch Hurwitz currently writing the script and series executive producer Ron Howard in line to direct the feature....

Development on Mortal Kombat 2 is speeding up as Simon McQuoid, who directed the 2021 original, has boarded the sequel. McQuoid made his feature directorial debut with Mortal Kombat, and while the film wasn’t a big hit with critics, his execution and faithfulness to the games were praised. Mortal Kombat debuted simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max as part of Warner Bros.’s controversial strategy but ended up overperforming. Mortal Kombat grossed $84 million at the box office against a $55 million budget and became the most-viewed Warner Bros....

According to Variety, the Revolution Studios remake of the Cary Grant comedy Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is getting an extreme makeover: Pic is now the sequel to Are We There Yet? Ice Cube remains the star and Steve Carr the director, but when production begins in Vancouver in June, the comedy will be titled Are We Done Yet? The studio is moving quickly to lock in deals with Nia Long, who played the single mom and Cube’s love interest in the original, and Aleisha Allen and Philip Bolden, the adolescents who accompanied Cube’s kid-phobic character on a hellish road trip....

In the midst of James Gunn’s various DC announcements, one point that has not gone down well with some of those involved in the world of video games is that part of the big DC plan could see on-screen actors also voicing the same character in animated and video game projects. While there has recently been a lot of complaints raised over the casting of Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario over the character’s long-term voice actor Charles Martinet, Gunn’s plans have brought skepticism and more than a little derision from those in the industry....

HBO has released a brand new trailer for Game of Thrones season 8. Sort of. The network still isn’t ready to reveal much of anything in the way of actual footage from the upcoming final season of the hit fantasy series. No dragons. No bloodshed. None of that. Instead, they’ve opted to have several big-name celebrities declare their love for the series while fighting for ownership of the Iron Throne....
