The problem is that it leaves too many questions unanswered. The ultra-stylized narrative plays out like a violent music video. A rocking soundtrack thunders while a mystery doesn’t unfurl. I was left scratching my head when the credits rolled. There’s pulp entertainment galore but little understanding of the protagonist....

Welcome Paul Reiser to the cast of The Boys. Per Variety, it has just been reported that Reiser will play “The Legend,” a character who originally appeared in the comic book version of The Boys by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. M. Night Shyamalan has signed on to write, direct and produce the live-action adventure, Avatar: The Last Airbender for Paramount Pictures, MTV Films and Nick Movies. Nick wants to turn the film into a three-picture series with Shyamalan’s continuing involvement. The film marks the first time Shyamalan will direct material he didn’t create; the Nickelodeon series is from Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. I may be one of a handful of reviewers who say, “Sure, give Mammals a try.” Personally, I appreciate how it avoided a traditional narrative in lieu of, well, a more thematic approach. A casual dip in here, an explanation about what we’ve experienced later. Somehow it worked and I walked away feeling more intrigued by the show than not. Bottom line: Jez Butterworth, a two-time Olivier and Tony Award-winning scribe, seems to want viewers to appreciate the overall experience of Mammals, rather than get high off it—as if were a cheap thrill....
