Lionsgate has acquired the rights to Tyler Perry’s next two films, The Family That Preys Together and Madea Goes to Jail, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new titles will mark the sixth and seventh motion pictures teaming Perry with Lionsgate. Perry will direct The Family That Preys Together from his original screenplay and will play one of the film’s major roles. Additionally, he will direct and reprise his role as the title character in Madea Goes to Jail, an adaptation of Perry’s play about a series of events that occur after Madea spends a night in jail....
Home entertainment mavens gathered at a hotel in Tokyo, Japan to unveil new Blu-ray titles expected to also make a major impact in the US. In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, the following Blu-ray DVDs will be part of Japan’s launch of the next generation format: The Da Vinci Code, Chicken Little and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. “High-definition television broadcasting is catching on quickly in Japan,” Sony senior vp Kiyoshi Nishitani said....
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is due to introduce, reintroduce, (and in one case re-re-introduce) a whole phase of new characters to its roster in the coming years. Longtime actor Michelle Yeoh initially gained notoriety in the late 90s for starring in Hong Kong action films where she did her own stunt work. Warner Bros. has hired Mortal Kombat: Legacy creator Kevin Tancharoen to direct a new big-screen version of Mortal Kombat. Last June, the short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth exploded across the web, which amassed more than 10 million hits. Kevin Tancharoen directed the short, from a script by Oren Uziel, which was designed as a proof-of-concept video to pitch Kevin Tancharoen’s vision for a new Mortal Kombat movie. Instead, the short spawned Mortal Kombat: Legacy, a nine-episode web series which attracted more than 15 million viewers....

Lakeshore Records will release two volumes of music from Netflix original series Narcos digitally on September 2 and on CD shortly thereafter. The album features the songs featured in the first season of the hit series from artists including Los Golden Boys, Los Corraleros de Majagual, Los Pamperos, and Afrosound. The label previously released an album of the original score music, composed by Pedro Bromfman. The Alien franchise has come a long way since its relatively small 1979 origin, and now it looks like a new stand-alone movie in the franchise is coming courtesy of Don’t Breathe filmmaker Fede Alvarez. According to sources, the new movie will not be connected to either the upcoming TV series or the previous movies in the Alien franchise, although Ridley Scott will be on board to produce the new movie, which is said to have been picked up by 20th Century Studios “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch....

According to Variety, Revolution Studios has set Nigel Cole to direct Strange Son, the Bruce Joel Rubin-scripted true story of a mother’s quest to communicate with her autistic son. Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas is producing for Julia Roberts’ production company, Red Om. Deborah Schindler will exec produce. The pic is based on a book written by Portia Iverson, wife of producer Jon Shestack, about her son Dov, now 13. FilmDistrict announced today that it has acquired US distribution rights to Good Universe’s Oldboy, the remake of the highly-acclaimed South Korean suspense film.
