Spoiler Warning: Paper Girls Season One
The time travel show began in 1988 and follows four young girls, Erin, KJ, Tiffany, and Mac, who are all delivering papers on a dark, gloomy morning just after Halloween. The job is the last bit of hope they have, all for different reasons. For Erin, this job means that she will be able to start a new life for her and her family, while for KJ, it is a means of escapism away from her ‘perfect’ life, which she doesn’t want. Tiffany needs the money to begin her future and follow her dreams, while for KJ, it is simply just a job, which for her is a step in the right direction.

They are sent on a wild and exciting journey through time, which will ultimately save the world, and on their travels, they explore different versions of themselves and must decide if they want to accept what they see and what their fate will be.
The season finale left us on a serious cliffhanger, and fans and critics crave a season two. This is because we were left with many unanswered questions, so let’s take a recap of how season one ended and exactly what fans want to find out.
Navigating Different Timelines
Prime Video
As the season followed the girls trying to navigate their way through time while also dealing with the fact they have seen their future selves, we were also gradually finding more information about the Time war.
The war is between two factions: The STF Underground, a rebellious group that believes the future can be changed for the better through traveling in time, and the Old Watch, who are the authorities in charge of keeping the timeline in check and not tampered with. Just before the girls were thrown through time, it was STF members Heck and Naldo that they came into contact with.
In the war, led by Old Watch member Prioress, Heck and Naldo manages to save the girls, handing a strange gadget to Tiffany. Now, the gadget can take the STF along with an adult version of Erin into 2019 to find the girls and take them home.
However, when they find the girls, along the way, something goes wrong, and they travel to 1999 instead of 1988. Just as they try to find their way back, they get attacked by Old Watch’s giant creepy travel robot, where Larry is killed, and adult Erin sacrifices herself to destroy the robot. Not only were viewers shocked, but so was Erin as she just watched her future self die.
Viewers are taken on their wild goose chase to find a way home, which they now (with the help of the 1999 version of Tiffany) think could be a 1999 version of Larry’s home. Although, more obstacles are thrown their way when Prioress, head of the Old Watch, reaches Larry’s house. The ending was unexpected and left us hanging off a giant cliff.
Which Timelines Are the Characters In?
First, where on earth are KJ and Mac? When the girls are being thrown around time, it is easy to get lost. We last saw them on the inside of a ship, once again, being sent into another timeline. But how will they get home? Did Prioress send them back to ‘88? Although, they might have also traveled into the future to find a cure for Mac’s cancer. However, which timeline will that be in?
It’s incredibly hard to track which timeline everyone is in, especially when we see Erin and Tiff land on the farm years before ‘88. How could this possibly help the war with the Old Watch, and who will they bump into in this lifetime? With them running around their younger selves, it is quite hard to find a purpose for it. However, knowing Paper Girls, another captivating twist will surely be thrown in there. We do hope that perhaps traveling to the past gives Tiff the chance to find some answers to her questions about her biological parents.
Surely along the way, there will be multiple versions of everyone, which means that the chances of bumping into someone are quite likely. This means there’s hope of finding KJ and Mac and maybe even bumping into Juniper and Larry somewhere. Perhaps we’ll even see a younger or older version of Prioress along their time-jumping journey.
Why Can’t Erin and Tiff Remember?
All this time travel is a strange experience, but so far, we have become aware that the older Erin and the older Tiff do not recall time travel. What does this mean? In their lifetime, did this not happen? Or did the Old Watch take away their memory of it? If that’s so, it means they’re technically on the right path, the older versions just don’t remember, or have they created something completely new and messed up their entire lifeline?
Will the Road in Season Two Lead Back to ‘88?
Of course, the main question is, will they ever make it home to ‘88? It was a constant battle for viewers to watch the girls come close to finding their way back every time, only to be thrown once again into another time. What new timelines will they find? Will they find their way home, and will the world be saved?
Although the show hasn’t officially been renewed for a second season, there are speculations, and fans are keeping their fingers crossed because we have many questions that we’re desperately trying to get answered. Let’s hope that somewhere in the future, we’ll see the Paper Girls again.
