Comedy shows have a challenge when they premiere: how will they push the envelope? Many sitcoms will focus on a family or group of friends, telling their story through multiple angles. However, what seems to be a hit among audiences are mockumentary-style sitcoms. A mockumentary is a first-person account of events, shot with a single camera. Characters address the audience directly either through body language or in a ‘confessional’. Mockumentary-style shows are so well received due to the relatability of the drama. Everyone has had a bad boss or a co-worker who was too excited on Monday morning. Yet Parks and Recreation pushes the envelope beyond workplace shenanigans.
Leading the comedy series is an onslaught of formidable comediennes like Amy Poehler, Retta, and Rashida Jones, to name a few. Each character has interesting personal connections played by some recognizable faces. Whether they are former SNL alum or the future president, the cameo appearances on the show are unforgettable. Of course, what makes Parks and Recreation special is how each cameo acts as a catalyst or dream come true for the character, or characters, attached. Here are the best cameos in the series, ranked.

10 Fred Armisen (Season 2, Episode 5)
NBC
SNL and Portlandia star Fred Armisen plays Raul, the Head of the Venezuelan Parks Department. While Raul is not the most gracious guest in Parks and Recreation history, he is the most welcoming to Donna. The best part about Raul is that he rarely smiles, except when describing his pride for his country and the beautiful parks in his city.

9 Will Forte (Season 3, Episode 3)
Another SNL alum to appear on the show is Will Forte. He plays Kelly Larson, a big fan of the Twilight novels, determined to have them placed in the Pawnee time capsule. When Leslie initially denies this request, Kelly handcuffs himself to a chair in her office. Kelly’s reasoning for the request and handcuffing is to connect with his daughter.
8 Patricia Clarkson (Season 4, Episodes 1-2)
Audiences had met Megan Mullally’s Tammy 2 on several occasions throughout Parks and Recreation’s run, but the question remained: who was Tammy 1? Enter: Patricia Clarkson. With Tammy 2, Ron Swanson turned into sex-maniac, but Tammy 2 brought out his proper side. Clarkson’s portrayal of Tammy 1 is sheer perfection. Tammy 1, and by extension Tammy 2, are reminders that your ex may bring out a different side of you, and it may not always be the best side.
7 Sean Hayes (Season 4, Episode 18)
Will and Grace star, and TV icon, Sean Hayes appears in Parks and Recreation as arrogant news anchor Buddy Wood. He spends his interview with Leslie mocking her and Pawnee. If Leslie has a pressure point, it is definitely how people talk about Pawnee. Buddy’s appearance was not just social commentary, but a message that Leslie’s trajectory would remain grounded in Pawnee.
6 Jonathan Banks (Season 5, Episode 6)
Creator Michael Schur revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he wanted Ben’s dad to be like Mike Ehrmentraut from Breaking Bad. The stars aligned when Jonathan Banks, who portrays Mike in the AMC series, was cast as Steve Wyatt in Parks and Recreation. He appears at Leslie and Ben’s engagement party with his second wife, Ulani, revealing they are expecting a child. He even has a stare-down with Leslie over Twizzlers and Red Vines.
5 J.K. Simmons (Season 5, Episode 17)
When Ben Wyatt was Mayor of Partridge, Minnesota, he bankrupted the town to build his dream: Ice Town. After many years, the current mayor invites him back in an attempt to boost his numbers. Mayor Stice, portrayed by J.K. Simmons, admitted as much to Leslie and a medicated Ben in a private meeting. Stice’s appearance in Parks and Recreation is a reminder that no matter how far you go, some people will only remember you for your mistakes.
4 Then-First Lady Michelle Obama (Season 6, Episode 21)
As Leslie continued to gain recognition by politicians in Washington D.C., it was only a matter of time before others noticed her work in Pawnee. As Leslie focused on making her town more active, it was only natural for then-First Lady Michelle Obama to appear on Parks and Recreation. While Obama isn’t the first big name in politics to appear on a comedy show, she does join a small group of First Ladies that made cameos in a comedy show, as Portable Press details.
3 Ginuwine (Season 6, Episode 22)
When Donna reluctantly hosts Jerry’s party at her family’s cabin, she nonchalantly reveals that Ginuwine is her cousin. Schur revealed to E! Online that Retta, who plays Donna, is a human onion: she sings opera and loves hockey, so they wrote into the show that Ginuwine was her cousin because Donna herself is a human onion. The R&B artist appears as himself to perform at the Unity concert put on by the Parks Department.
2 Questlove (Season 7, Episode 7)
April was put in charge of keeping the Meagle family peaceful on Donna’s wedding day. Everything was going swimmingly until Donna’s estranged brother LeVondrious (Questlove) crashed her reception. Questlove’s cameo is two-fold for fans. First, this is a full-circle cameo in Donna’s story, when she references that she hates Ron like she hates her brother in Season 3. The second reason this cameo is legendary is that Questlove is a longtime Parks and Recreation fan.
1 Then-Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden (Season 7, Episode 13)
Current President Joe Biden is one of the few cameos to appear multiple times as themselves. When he appeared as Vice President when the show aired, he left Leslie speechless with his encouraging words and presence in both appearances. What’s more, his second cameo was even more special, when his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, offered some encouraging words to Leslie as well.
