One of Us Is Lying, the young adult drama series based on the novel of the same name by Karen M. McManus, was canceled from Peacock, according to a new report from Deadline. Although the novel version remained on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 130 weeks, the TV series lasted two seasons on the TV channel.
The storyline of the canceled show focuses on five students who enter detention at Bayview High. The mystery begins when only four students walk out alive, leaving one student dead. The four students, Bronwyn (Marianly Tejada), Nate (Cooper Van Grootel), Addy (Annalissa Cochrane), and Cooper (Chibuikem Uche), are all suspects with motives to murder their classmate. However, they all claim to be innocent, and the story revolves around which of them is lying.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
The show was first released in October 2021 and was the first series on Peacock to go from a pilot to an entire season. The second season of the show was later released in November 2022.
The novel was adapted for television by Erica Saleh, who wrote the pilot script for the show and was also the showrunner for season two of the series after Darío Madrona. Madrona remained on the series as an executive producer. John Sacchi and Matt Groesch were also on the show as executive producers. Groesch, Jan Oxenberg, Molly Nussbaum, and Bill Johnson also developed the pilot alongside Saleh.
Alongside Tejada, Van Grootel, Cochrane, and Uche, the show stars Melissa Collazo as Maeve Rojas, Barrett Carnahan as Jake Riordan, Jess McLeod as Janae Matthews, and Mark McKenna as Simon Kelleher.
Will There Ever Be a Third Season?
Netflix exclusively streams the series in other countries across the globe, including Brazil, India, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. However, it is unclear whether Netflix will become the new home for the show.
Coincidentally, Peacock canceled One of Us Is Lying after the streamer discontinued Vampire Academy, another young adult series.
Peacock was not disappointed with either of the shows from a creative perspective. However, the shows did not receive sufficient viewers to keep them running. Universal Studio Group, the company behind both series, is looking for other options to keep both shows running.
The show’s cancelation comes as bad news to fans, who have been waiting for a third season after the second season ended on a cliffhanger. While fans speculate possible events for the series, their only hope is Universal Studio Group finds a new home for the series.
