The Best Man: The Final Chapters is the third and final edition in The Best Man franchise created by Malcolm D. Lee, which premiered Dec. 22. The closing saga brought audiences back into the lives of the close-knit college friend group as they navigate complicated relationships and unpredictable events in their transition into midlife adulthood. According to reports obtained by Variety, the miniseries officially cracked Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings, making it the first Peacock original to do so.

The preliminary NBCU-obtained Nielsen data states that The Best Man: The Final Chapters currently ranks at number 5 on Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming Originals chart during the December 19-25 viewing period. Although exact viewing minutes aren’t available for this period yet, it can be concluded that the show had a massive turnout since it only had a four-day window to pull enough viewership to rank on the list. The Final Chapters’ premiere week marks Peacock’s biggest-streaming debut for an original series to date, dethroning Bel-Air – the highly popular, Fresh Prince dramatic remake. Despite losing one title, Bel-Air still holds Peacock’s slot as their most-streamed original series, reaching 8 million accounts since its 2022 premiere. Given The Final Chapters’ meteoric streaming debut and the franchises’ loyal fanbase, they may also topple this record.

Additionally, Nielsen’s data showed the series was the number 1 streaming series for Black audiences these past few weeks. Bel-Air and The Final Chapters streaming successes show that the nascent streamer has the potential to offer compelling and competitive content that rivals the major streaming giants. Before the nostalgic comedy series, Peacock only appeared on Nielsen’s rankings for their acquired content, such as Yellowstone, Halloween Ends, and Nope.

The Best Man Cast Had to Overcome Challenges Switching From Film to Television

Malcolm D. Lee’s beloved Best Man franchise got its start in theaters over 20 years ago with a solid principal cast who are now prominent actors in Hollywood and staples within Black cinema. Its conclusory chapter transitions longtime fans from the big screen to television in an eight-part series. The Final Chapters’ transition from the franchise’s feature-length format allows the events to unfold gradually and dig deeper into the evolution of the characters and their relationships. It also gives the viewers more time with their favorite on-screen friend group.

According to The Best Man stars Nia Long and Taye Diggs, there were challenges they had to overcome with switching cinematic formats, based on a report from TheGrio. “It was challenging for me to go from film to television because there are certain things that you have to do to adjust to the platform that you can just have more freedom in film. But for the audience, I think they are going to love [the series],” Long explained. “The series jumps different places in time, and we have to kind of imagine what this character would do in a time that we haven’t acted yet…but it’s gonna be great to watch! There’s backstory that you get, some secrets that are kind of exposed that you didn’t realize, so it’s really fun,” stated Diggs.

All eight episodes of The Best Man: The Final Chapters are available for streaming on Peacock.
