Waller-Bridge, who similarly plays an adventurer in the upcoming movie Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, does not plan to star as Lara Croft in the series, sticking with a behind-the-scenes role. Casting has not yet begun and it’s not clear at this time who will be taking on that iconic role. It would mark the fourth live-action project for Lara, as the character was previously played by Angelina Jolie in a pair of films in 2001 and 2003 before the Vikander-led reboot.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
The Prime Video show will also be the first live-action show, but not the first series from the Tomb Raider franchise. Lara Croft was previously featured in the one-season series Revisioned: Tomb Raider in 2007 for TBS’s online gaming service GameTap. More recently, it was announced in 2021 that an anime series based on Tomb Raider is also in development at Netflix from Legendary Entertainment. Hayley Atwell provides the voice of Lara Croft in that series, which is set in the same continuity of the reboot video game trilogy.
Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider 2 Is Officially Dead
After the Tomb Raider reboot was released in 2018, there had been tentative plans to bring back Vikander for a sequel. At one point, Misha Green was brought on board to write the script, and Vikander had been expressing her desire to return in another movie. However, issues behind the scenes led to the sequel getting scrapped, as it was reported in July of last year that MGM had waited too long to greenlight the project. Their rights to the franchise had expired by that point, putting Tomb Raider back up for other interested bidders to acquire to take their own stab at adapting the video game. It wasn’t really clear what would happen to Tomb Raider since then before getting to this new plan to make a TV show with Waller-Bridge.
