The Pitch Perfect trilogy was a franchise that embodied the themes of sisterhood in a college a cappella group who later transcended their bond into adulthood. Peacock’s Pitch Perfect spinoff, Bumper In Berlin, has Bumper Allen as the central character, someone who barely resonated as an antagonist or even an integral supporting character throughout the first two Pitch Perfect films. If there was going to be a spinoff from Pitch Perfect, it could have followed someone who had a deeper involvement in the plot or with the movie’s central characters. Other than Amy, Bumper barely had a connection with anyone else, with his dynamics with the Treblemakers arguably barely making an appearance.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Pitch Perfect 3 set up various openings for spinoffs for many of the Bellas. It would have been a fantastic launching point for the central character, Beca Mitchell, as she finally seems to know precisely where in the music industry she belongs and has a bright future ahead of her. Aspiring artist Emily Junk also could have been an intriguing avenue as she seems to have been determined to get back into songwriting after being distracted by school and a cappella. Even Benji and Jesse, who were absent from Pitch Perfect 3, and do not necessarily fit the mold of the sisterhood storyline the franchise highlighted so much, still could have been an exciting angle as it was left relatively undetermined what happened to them after playing more critical roles in the first two films.
Amy
Universal Pictures
Although it is not entirely clear what angle a series would take with Amy as the lead, it likely would have worked given her status as a fan-favorite. As a supporting character, Amy got away with many jokes and comments that made her unable to hold up a series had she been the main protagonist. Although Amy is given some development throughout the trilogy, a spinoff series following her would allow Amy to continue to develop and potentially be given more growth than what she has portrayed thus far. Although Amy did not end up in the music industry at the conclusion of Pitch Perfect 3, she is still clearly a performer.
Aubrey
Aubrey may have realized that competitive performances in front of crowds may not be what she was cut out to do, but that does not mean she could not lead a spinoff. In Pitch Perfect 3, Aubrey decided to give up her job and try a new career. It is a position that uses her competitive energy without the elements that make her nauseous. Following Aubrey on her new journey could have been an exciting plot line. Although music may not have naturally been at the forefront of Aubrey’s new career, perhaps the series would have been able to make music an underlying essential element anyway.
Benji
Benji was ecstatic about joining the Treblemakers and appeared to take over the group as leader after Jesse left for California. In Pitch Perfect 2, in addition to his growing presence as a group member, he also showed himself to be romantically interested in Emily. The two are given a conclusion that teases them from getting together. However, personally or professionally, there is no mention of him in Pitch Perfect 3. So, what happened to Benji? Even if he and Emily broke up, Benji’s future was never mentioned, even in the two films in which he appears. Did Benji go on to become a magician? Did he try to make it in music? Where did his life go after college?
Jesse
Although Beca and Jesse’s romance does not work out, he is one of the central characters from the first two films whose goal is to be involved in the music industry. Due to Jesse’s role in Pitch Perfect, he is well-developed, and the audience knows he wants to score movies as a career. That is a side of the music industry that the Pitch Perfect franchise never shows and could have been an exciting jump point for a spinoff. Scoring movies is easily connected to music and the potential for Jesse to sing. Although Pitch Perfect 3 teases that Jesse continued his career in California, it could have been interesting to see what he did next. Besides, his connection to Beca would have made Jesse an easier target for a spinoff.
The Next Generation Of Bellas
One of the reasons the Bellas were so determined to win the Worlds Competition was because it would ensure their a cappella group would continue after graduation. So, who are the Bellas after everyone, including Emily, has graduated? Who is next? The spinoff could have centered on the familiar location of Barden University with connections to the Bellas and Treblemakers with a new set of faces and personalities. Having a spinoff set at Barden University could have expanded on the students who attend, a new group of a cappella hopefuls, and even teased the legacies of what had happened to the graduated Bellas and Treblemakers.
Chloe
Given Chloe’s refusal to leave Barden University in Pitch Perfect 2 and her uncertainties toward her future as a veterinarian in Pitch Perfect 3, seeing Chloe succeed in the medical field and embracing adulthood could have been the next step in Chloe’s development. Chloe may have decided against music for a career, but she was still a fan favorite and one of the beating hearts of the franchise. As she concludes Pitch Perfect 3 with a bright future ahead of her, there is always the chance to expand on her character and relationships.
Emily
Emily is a Bella hopeful when she is introduced. However, rather than performing a cover of an existing song, Emily performs her original composition. Throughout Pitch Perfect 2, Emily sprinkles in “Flashlight” until she and Beca can work it into their considerable finale number at the Worlds Competition. Composing her songs is a big part of what makes her so essential to Beca when Beca is asked to produce a piece rather than deliver mash-ups. Their teamwork connects to each of their potential in music.
But, in Pitch Perfect 3, Emily reveals she has not written a song in a while. The Bellas quickly put Emily straight when they discover that and encourage Emily to continue songwriting before she can regret it. Emily’s work toward becoming a professional musician is a journey that could mirror Beca’s slow build to a professional career and set up a new set of storylines and excitement for the character.
Beca
Pitch Perfect 3 delivers Beca a perfect ending, with her moving forward and becoming a professional musician in a way she had not anticipated. The conclusion to the trilogy marks a new beginning for Beca, which is why a spinoff series surrounding the next chapter of her life would be so exciting. Beca had been working toward success in music for years, and now that she finally has it, it is impossible not to root for Beca to continue her success. But does Beca become a breakout artist on the radio? Do fans flock to see her in concert? How does Beca’s professional career turn out? What are the highs and lows she faces as a musician, and how do her friendships with the Bellas and her history with a cappella give her a unique sound and perspective?
