Natasha Lyonne is teaming up with some of the best talents in Hollywood for the upcoming murder mystery series Poker Face. The project comes from director Rian Johnson, the filmmaker behind the popular Knives Out franchise starring Daniel Craig. This will be Johnson’s first TV series he created after previously directing episodes of Breaking Bad and Terriers.

Poker Face, which arrives on Peacock early next year, follows Lyonne’s character, Charlie Cale, as she travels across the country, solving a new mystery with every pit stop. Lyonne is known for several big-time roles, as she’s starred in feature films such as American Pie and prominent shows including Orange is the New Black and Russian Doll. Additionally, the actress will appear as herself in Johnson’s Knives Out follow-up, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The brand-new teaser trailer, showcasing Charlie Cale and the various characters she’ll meet along her adventures, can be found below.

The official synopsis for Poker Face reads: “A 10-episode ‘mystery-of-the-week’ series following Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.” Based on the description, Poker Face will be set up like an anthology though Lyonne’s character will remain the constant in the series. Of course, other characters could continue to cross over from episode to episode, though that remains to be seen.

Poker Face features a tremendous cast, including Brandon Michael Hall, Scott Vogel, Nick Nolte, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Adrien Brody, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Benjamin Bratt, Lil Rel Howery, and Charles Melton. The series is nearly ready for release, arriving exclusively on Peacock early next year, on January 26, 2023.

Natasha Lyonne is the Backbone of Poker Face

Natasha Lyonne is the overarching star of Poker Face, as she keeps the 10-part series connected through her various mysteries. Audiences should find her character fascinating, as she essentially acts as a human lie detector based on the synopsis. Rian Johnson has praised her work in the past, telling Variety Poker Face wouldn’t be the same without her.

“The show was created around her, and the whole thing is tailored to Natasha like a bespoke suit,” Johnson explains. Though this is their first time working together on a television project, it seems as though their relationship immediately clicked. Johnson adds, “It could only exist with her charisma and presence at the center of it… She’s got a very Fellini-type sensibility, where the funny and absurd is a way into the dark and personal.”

Fans can see Lyonne, Gordon-Levitt, Perlman, and the rest of the outstanding cast when Poker Face premieres on Peacock this coming January.
