Rian Johnson is back in the mystery genre, though this time, he’s bringing his talents to the small screen with Poker Face. The filmmaker, who serves as a director and writer on the series, is ready to debut the upcoming show later this month. Natasha Lyonne stars in the lead role as Charlie Cale, constantly on the road and solving mysteries that seem to follow her everywhere she goes. She has a certain intuition about someone whose lying, which serves her well when dealing with the constant death and unsolved cases she confronts.

The official trailer for the series was recently released courtesy of Peacock, giving viewers another glimpse of what to expect from Lyonne and the all-star cast that will join her from week to week. The brand-new trailer can be found below.

In the trailer, audiences can see the host of characters, gunfights, and adversaries Charlie will encounter, as she’s constantly hunted by Ron Perlman and Benjamin Bratt’s characters. “You’re gonna find Charlie Cale, and you’re gonna bring her to me.” Life on the run is stressful, though death seems to follow Lyonne’s character everywhere she goes. Audiences will tag along with her journey throughout the 10-episode series as the stakes continue to rise while the series progresses. The official synopsis for Poker Face reads:

Poker Face has a fantastic cast, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Erik McKay, Adrien Brody, Stephanie Hsu, Scott Vogel, Tim Blake Nelson, Jameela Jamil, and Tim Meadows, among others. The series is nearly ready for release, with Poker Face debuting on Peacock later this month on Jan. 26.

Poker Face is a 10-episode ‘mystery-of-the-week’ series following Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.

Rian Johnson Loves a Good Mystery

Though Rian Johnson may always be known for his contribution to Star Wars: Episode VII- The Last Jedi, whether that be for better or worse, the filmmaker has seen enormous success within the mystery genre. In 2019, he released Knives Out, starring Daniel Craig, a smash hit at the box office, spawning the eventual Netflix sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Both films have been praised by audiences and critics, with a third entry currently in the works.

When discussing Poker Face, Johnson shared what drew him to a mystery-of-the-week series.

Audiences may be seeing more from Poker Face following the first season, but, of course, that depends on the show’s performance on its streaming platform. However, with the talent both in front of and behind the camera, Poker Face has a chance to be a sure hit for Peacock.

“You sat down and you got an entire story. There was usually a fun guest star, and it was always anchored by a truly cool, charismatic personality. The fact that with each new episode we can attack a totally different style and story and cast … it’s something similar to the mystery movies with Daniel [Craig]. If I can keep doing it, then I will.”
