The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends are adding their names to the long list of things from our childhood that are being rebooted. The two Emmy-winning shows are picked up by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe and thrown back into the mix by their creator, Craig McCracken.

That’s right, two of our favorite childhood cartoons are coming back to a screen near you, and they’re not just being recycled as some half-baked attempt at a nostalgic throwback. They’ll be in the hands of their original creator, someone who cares about what the shows really are, which is the big reason to be excited.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

There was already a reboot of the Powerpuff Girls in 2016, but it didn’t have Craig McCracken on board. This new season is meant to take the show back to its roots. With Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends also joining the lineup, there are undoubtedly great things in the works. Two of our favorite childhood shows are returning, and we couldn’t be more excited. These are some heavy-hitters from Cartoon Network back in the day; having them back now is truly a wonderful thing. And we’re sure all of you are ready to take this big nostalgia trip with us.

Each show’s reboot is going to be a little different. Normally a studio would start each show over again, but this time, McCracken and Sarah Fell (the Vice-President of Original Kids and Family Animation at Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe who will be overseeing the shows’ development) plan to have the Powerpuff Girls restart more on the lines of the original and have Foster’s Home reboot entirely.

Per Deadline, Sam Register, the President of Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, said:

The Powerpuff Girls will be coming back to their same old selves. This new series is meant to be similar to the original, where the girls will face old familiar enemies and get right back to saving the world before bedtime. But it was hinted that there might also be some new parts to the show, as apparently, we will be seeing some new villains added to the roster. What the story will be, we aren’t yet sure. But it is said that this series will build on the original.

The question of whether the original voice actors will return is also in doubt, but studios seem determined to do some exciting things with the Powerpuff Girls. Along with the 2016 reboot, which ran for three years, the CW shot a pilot for a live-action version of the Powerpuff Girls in 2021. Although the idea didn’t get signed for an entire season at the time, the network said they would be reworking the show, so expect to see that sometime in the future.

It’s complicated from where we might be seeing new reboots with the Powerpuff Girls title. Because, as McCracken explained to SYFY Wire in 2020:

Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends

The second show McCracken is famous for adding to Cartoon Network’s long line of fantastic animation is Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Old kids will remember Mac’s adventures with Bloo in the crazy adoptive home for abandoned imaginary friends. The show had a crazy cast of characters, including Wilt, Eduardo, Mr. Herriman, and Coco. The house was run by the elderly Madame Foster and her granddaughter Frankie.

During its five-year run, Foster’s Home won six Emmys and was one of the most popular shows on Cartoon Network. Now that the show is coming back, we can no doubt expect an equally amazing performance from its creators. But its reboot will be slightly different from Powerpuff Girls.

Instead of building on the original show, this new version of Foster’s Home will start over with a cast of pre-school-aged imaginary friends. So the show will be targeted toward the younger generation, but it is certain to retain the magic and wonder we all experienced in our youth.

No matter what happens, it’s certain that we’ll be reviving some old memories of sitting on the couch with a bowl of sugar cereal in our hands, hearing the old familiar notes of a popular theme song.
