The success of Predator prequel Prey was sealed when the movie delivered the best reviews of the entire franchise and saw initial viewing numbers blowing away all expectations. Now the latest figures have revealed that the film has continued to expand its viewership, and managed to pass the huge milestone of 1 billion streamed minutes according to new figures released by Neilsen.

Despite plenty of negativity about the movie before even a single bit of footage had been released, the arrival of Prey on Hulu instantly stripped away the doubts about whether a Predator movie under the control of Disney could stand up with the other movies in the franchise. Stripping back the action to a 1700’s setting, and pitting the space alien against a Comanche tribe, brought something new to the franchise while also holding onto some of the tension and raw brutality of the original movie.

Prey director Dan Trachtenberg recently commented on the complaints that some fans have made against the new addition to the Predator franchise, and said much of it comes down to them suffering from the Mandela Effect when it comes to recalling 1987’s Predator, commenting that “people remember Predator as ‘Guys with big guns fight the thing’”. While that does count for some of it, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch ends up abandoning his military weapons and takes on the Predator in one on one combat, and that is where Prey finds Naru and her Comanche tribe, who obviously don’t have any kind of modern weaponry.

Prey Could Get A Sequel Thanks To Its Impressive Viewing Figures

Amber Midthunder has brought a new heroine to the world of Predator, and with the highest reviews of the franchise and viewer numbers to back it up, it is not surprising that there have already been questions about whether the actress will be back to reprise her role in a sequel. When asked about a potential return, the actress said:

“I’ve heard a lot of fans say that. I think it’s very flattering. I didn’t really think much about what would happen to the movie coming out. I was so focused on making the movie that I think to me, it was like, that was the finish line. I didn’t have a lot of expectations, one way or the other, for it coming out. So, for people to respond so positively to that level, I just feel really humbled by it. I feel really excited.”

While Dan Trachtenberg has said he has many ideas of where a sequel could go, a follow-up has not yet been given any kind of go-ahead from Disney, but it is fair to say that fans would love to see another addition to the Predator franchise in the future. However, with Prey having already explored Naru’s environment a follow-up movie would have to avoid the same kind of diminishing returns that the rest of the Predator franchise has suffered over the last three decades.

Prey is available now on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ in most international territories.
