Work on a sequel to the 1996 disaster movie hit, Twister, has now begun. But sadly, Prey director Dan Trachtenberg will not be at the helm. Despite recent reports claiming that Trachtenberg is being sought-after to direct Twister 2, which it has now been revealed will be titled Twisters, the filmmaker himself has now taken to Twitter to refute such claims.
The reports of him directing have been greatly exaggerated, it seems. The news that Dan Trachtenberg is not being eyed to bring Twisters to life is disappointing, with the director having already proven his talents despite being so early in his career thanks to the likes of 10 Cloverfield Lane, his work on both Black Mirror and The Boys, and his recent Predator prequel, Prey, which has reignited the long-time fledgling franchise.

Details have recently emerged regarding the Twister sequel, with the original outing landing in theaters in the before times of 1996. Directed by Jan de Bont from a screenplay by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, and starring Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Todd Field, and Jeremy Davies, the first Twister follows university professor Dr. Jo Harding, an underfunded team of students, and Jo’s estranged husband, Bill, as they prepare the prototype for Dorothy, a ground-breaking tornado data-gathering device during the approach of the most powerful storm in decades.
A recent report has revealed that Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are now working on bringing Twister sequel, Twisters, to the big screen, with the studios currently searching for a director. Dan Trachtenberg’s name was dropped alongside the likes of Oscar-winning Free Solo filmmaker team Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi and Travis Knight, who is best known for Kubo and the Two Strings and the Transformers prequel Bumblebee. Unfortunately, it sounds like Trachtenberg has not been contacted. Not yet, anyway.
Twisters Will Follow the Storm-Chasing Daughter of Bill Paxton & Helen Hunt’s Characters

Reports have further revealed the general plot details of Twisters, with the sequel set to center on the daughter of Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt’s characters who “has caught the storm-chasing bug her parents had.” Beloved actor Bill Paxton sadly passed away in 2017, and while the production is reportedly striving to bring back Helen Hunt, it sounds like they have also found the right way to pay tribute to Paxton by having his daughter follow in his storm-chasing footsteps.
One original cast member who has already expressed their desire to return is Sean Whalen, who starred in Twister as Allan Sanders, the assistant navigator to Robert “Rabbit” Nurick, played by Alan Ruck. “I am so grateful to have been a part of this original movie,” Whalen said. “It has helped me travel to places I never would’ve gone to and to meet hundreds of people I never would’ve met. That said, there is no need to keep asking if I am involved in the sequel. I wouldn’t know for months and if I was involved they probably wouldn’t let me tell you anyway. I am assuming they will pick maybe a few original people and I may or may not be one of them. Obviously, I would love to be a part of it, But it’s all good. I’m just happy to be part of the Twister original."
Stay tuned for more on the development of Twisters.
