There have been plenty of fan theories as to how Prey 2 could continue the latest Predator story, but according to director Dan Trachtenberg none have them have come up with the idea he considers the best. Trachtenberg has made it clear that he would love to continue his journey in the world of the green-blooded alien, and he has plenty of ideas to work with. Although, Prey could have certainly performed well in cinemas, it had to settle for a streaming premier of Hulu and Disney+, but it became the biggest Hulu premier in the platform’s history which certainly counted for something.
Since Arnold Schwarzenegger took on the Predator in the 1987 sci-fi action movie, the franchise has gone through some bad sequels and some not so bad ones, but Prey surprised everyone by not only being a breath of fresh air to the franchise but also outdoing the original with many viewers ratings. Having put the Predator, or multiple Predators, in various settings such as the city, the suburbs and on a distant planet, Prey took the creature back into the great outdoors and back in time to the 1700s where it was pitted against Naru and her Comanche tribe. When it comes to a sequel, Trachtenberg told Radio 1’s Screen Time podcast that he has seen many fan theories but he has lots of ideas no one has mentioned yet. He said:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“I would like to be involved, and I think there’s several really cool things to do next, and it would be interesting to embark on a few different things, rather than… And I think some of the more exciting ideas are ones that people aren’t considering, you know? Just as this movie was a, like, ‘I can’t believe they haven’t made this yet,’ there’s a few other ideas out there, for me, that are, like, ‘Oh, they haven’t done this yet. This could be cool.’ So, yeah. […] That moment [of inspiration] may have already been had.”
A Prey Sequel Has Not Yet Been Greenlit
Hulu
While many Predator fans would love to see a sequel to Prey, and it will almost certainly happen considering the movie’s reception, there is no sign that one has been greenlit just yet. With Disney having many new IPs to play with thanks to their merger with Fox, they may not be in a hurry to follow up Prey, and having created such a unique and almost universally praised addition to the Predator franchise it could be wise to hold off just a little while.
There are plenty of good movie sequels that have been ruined by studios rushing to churn them out, and as has been proven recently, fans are more than willing to wait for an excellent movie. Where exactly the next Predator movie sets its story is something that we can only wait and see, but it seems more than likely that Dan Trachtenberg will be at the helm whenever the movie does happen.
Prey is available now on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ in most international locations.
