The Deep: The Plot

The Deep takes place in the very near future where a disease called the ‘Gets has been affecting the population. Essentially, when you have the ‘Gets you begin forgetting things. Little things at first and then it progresses until you are just wandering around and no longer remember how to breathe.

Into this story comes Luke Nelson, a veterinarian, and brother to Clayton Nelson, possibly the smartest person in the world. Luke has been called to communicate with his estranged brother who has been researching a possible cure for the ‘Gets. However, there is a catch. Clayton Nelson is in an undersea lab eight miles down in the Marianas Trench.

Clayton is researching a new substance called “Ambrosia” which appears to be a universal healer and may be the key to fixing the plague that is devastating the world. But there’s always a catch. A scientist working with Lucas has arrived at the surface, his body deformed, sliced, and healed with a dire warning about what may be happening in the undersea lab.

It is up to Luke and his military escort, Alice, to get to the lab and find out what the scientists have been doing. Along the way, they befriend a Labrador test subject, find a paranoid scientist, learn the dark secrets of Ambrosia, and are forced to relive their most terrible memories in a brutal environment that humans were never meant to visit.

The Deep: The Cast & Crew

Luke Nelson, the protagonist could be played expertly by Matthew Gray Gubler, known for his work as Spencer Reid on the acclaimed show Criminal Minds. His character on the show is a brilliant investigator, and he would be well-suited to playing an inquisitive yet fearful and likable main character. His relatability could solidify the character and ground the plot in a sense of modern reality.

The character of Clayton Nelson would be expertly played by actor Cillian Murphy of Peaky Blinders. He is well-known and could bring a bit of star power to the production. He could also be quite convincing as the young but crazy older brother who is hellbent on his research. It would be a gripping power dynamic to see him play the unflinching, research-is-everything character whose care for humanity is nonexistent.

The role of Alice, the hardened but friendly military escort is a bit trickier. The actor needs to have a sarcastic bent to them while also having the ability to show trench humor and irrevocable fear. Aunjanue Ellis would be perfect for this role. Best known for her work in Lovecraft Country (2020) and King Richard (2021), her ability to play interesting characters could open up a variety of emotional and poignant scenes as her character descends into a state of madness.

There are a variety of other minor roles, including scientists and military personnel, but these are the main three that will need to be nailed down by respected actors in order for The Deep to succeed. As the production begins to ramp up we will likely begin to hear more about which actors have been chosen for these and other roles.

As of this writing, there is no set date for the release of The Deep. However, producers have stated that they are confident it will be in production by the end of the year. This means the series could be out by early 2024.
