While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit from their duties with the royal family became headline-making news, the couple’s new Netflix series, Harry & Meghan, has been rehashing plenty of the royal family drama since the first three episodes of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s show dropped last week. Today, Part 2 of the couple’s show was officially released on Netflix, and plenty of shocking new claims from Prince Harry and Markle have come along with the latest episodes. As noted by Buzzfeed News during the fifth episode of Harry & Meghan, Prince Harry claimed that in January 2020, without his permission, Kensington Palace press officials put his name on a statement denying that the Duke of Sussex’s brother, Prince William, “bullied” Prince Harry and his wife.

According to the Duke of Sussex, this incident was the perfect example of the royal institution protecting and prioritizing the heir to the throne over those in lower-ranking positions in the royal family. Prince Harry indicated that he and his wife, Markle, simply weren’t considered as important as his brother Prince William.
The statement that Prince Harry is referring was issued in response to a story published by The Times on January 13th, 2020. The article is titled “Princes ‘fell out because William wasn’t friendly towards Meghan.’” In it, the Times claimed that Prince Harry and Markle “regard themselves as having been pushed away from the royal family by the ‘bullying’ attitude of his brother the Duke of Cambridge.”
Then just hours after the article’s release, Kensington Palace released a statement saying that the article’s claims were a complete fabrication. At the time, the report from Kensington Palace appeared to be one of unity, as it came after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had already announced they were stepping back from royal duties.
The statement said, “Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge.” It added, “For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and harmful.”

Prince Harry Was Unaware of the Kensington Palace Statement

But according to Prince Harry, the Kensington Palace statement was something he had nothing to do with, nor was it something he’d approved. He said, “This story came out that part of the reason Meghan and I were leaving was because William bullied us out. And once I got in the car after the meeting, I was told about a joint statement that had been put out in my name and my brother’s name. I couldn’t believe it. No one had asked me. No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that.”
Prince Harry additionally noted that when he told his wife what had happened, Markle “burst into floods of tears, because within four hours, they were happy to lie to protect my brother, and yet for three years they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.”
Harry & Meghan is available to stream now on Netflix.
