As the former married couple wait for their appeals to work their way through the legal system, bits of information continue to come to light, particularly regarding the life of the Pirates of the Caribbean star. Paul Barresi, a private investigator hired by Amber Heard’s legal team to look into Johnny Depp, recently spoke with the Law and Crime Sidebar podcast and revealed some similarities between Depp and his father, Jon. At least when it comes to public firings.

Being a celebrity, having a job loss making the news is nothing strange, not even for Edward Scissorhands star. Depp was released from the Fantastic Beasts franchise following his loss in court in a libel lawsuit and Disney appears to be moving on without him with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. On the other hand, it’s not often that a mere civil servant’s firing is made public, such as the case with Depp’s dad.

Johnny Depp was six years old when his father lost his job as city manager. Jon, who Barresi describes as a passive individual and a trait he also attributes to Johnny, was a civil servant in the 1960s. The senior Depp family member was the city manager for the city of Frankfurt, Kentucky, but he was fired from the job in 1969 after he attempted to draw up a new budget for the city that included a small tax increase. The city council and mayor didn’t like that and pushed Jon Depp out of his position and the story was made known in the local newspaper. Barresi compared the firings of the two Depp men saying,

Barresi compliments Jon Depp’s passivity in that incident, calling it strength, as the man did not start a fight over the job loss, he simply moved on. But perhaps that’s where the similarities stop between father and son as Johnny Depp’s losing his role in Pirates of the Caribbean was not a firing he was willing to turn the cheek from. It became the basis for his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife. It’s not clear what the Heard legal team had hoped to gain by hiring a private detective or if anything will surface to help their case.

“This is so much in continuity with what Johnny’s going through right now with dismissal from the Fantastic Beasts series and allegedly being fired from Pirates. Turning the other cheek sometimes isn’t a bad thing.”
