More leaping will be done on NBC. Per THR, it has been announced that the Quantum Leap series revival has been officially renewed for season 2. The news comes after the network had previously ordered an additional six episodes for the show’s first season, bumping up the episode count from 12 to 18. The renewal news comes early, as Quantum Leap is still just partway through season 1 with eight episodes aired. The series returns from hiatus in January.

Of the renewal, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming’s president of scripted content, Lisa Katz, said: “We’re leaping into a second season thanks to the incredible work by our cast, producers, writers, and everyone who has played a role in giving this iconic NBC series a new life. As we continue to bring audiences to our must-watch dramas, it’s gratifying to know Quantum Leap will have a prominent place next season both on our NBC schedule and next day on Peacock.”

Rising viewership for the series has resulted in this early renewal, as it’s clearly making NBC feel more confident about the show’s potential. According to the network, the show has garnered 10.8 million total viewers thus far through its television airings and via streaming on Peacock, a high rise compared to the 3.35 million that initially tuned in for the series premiere. Announcing a renewal early lets fans know that the new Quantum Leap will be around for a while, perhaps enticing other viewers to now check it out.

The New Quantum Leap Is a Hit

The new version of Quantum Leap is set in the same universe as the original series where Scott Bakula’s Dr. Sam Beckett never made his way back home. Now, Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) winds up becoming the next leaper when he resumes Dr. Beckett’s work, getting transported throughout time from one person’s body to another. Also starring are Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park, Nanrisa Lee, and Ernie Hudson in key roles.

Bakula is not expected to appear in the first season after publicly announcing that he turned down an offer to reprise his role. He described it as a difficult decision but offered his blessings to the cast and crew. But even if Dr. Beckett won’t appear in the first season, the show getting renewed means that there will be more opportunities to potentially bring back the character if Bakula is persuaded to change his mind.

You can stream Quantum Leap on Peacock, and the series will resume airing new episodes on Jan. 2, 2023.
