Writer, comedian, actress, and producer Quinta Brunson has made Emmy history. Brunson’s Abbott Elementary on ABC has earned nominations in the Outstanding Comedy Series and actor categories following its wildly popular first season.

As the show’s creator and one of its stars, Brunson herself earned nominations for Outstanding Actress and for writing the pilot, making her the first Black woman to receive comedy nominations in the acting, writing, and series categories.

Brunson reacted to the news in a tweet Tuesday, writing:

The 2022 Emmy Awards will air on September 12 on NBC and Peacock at 5 p.m. PT.

Abbott Elementary is ABC’s Highest-Rated New Comedy

     Warner Bros.

Abbott Elementary follows a dedicated group of teachers in “one of the worst public schools in the country” as they aim to help their students succeed despite the lack of funding and incompetent leadership. The series, filmed mockumentary-style, quickly became a hit among viewers—Variety reports that Abbott Elementary’s average seven-day delayed viewership across its 13-episode first season made the show ABC’s highest-rated new comedy among adults 18-49.

Also starring Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, Lisa Ann Walter, and Sheryl Lee Ralph, season two of Abbott Elementary is set to premiere on ABC on September 21.
