More than two decades later, Election is getting a sequel. Variety reports that a follow-up to Election is now in development for a release straight to streaming on Paramount+. The film will bring back Reese Witherspoon to reprise her role as Tracy Flick from the original film with the sequel officially titled Tracy Flick Can’t Win.

Witherspoon is also producing alongside Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, while Bona Fide Productions’ Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa are also producing. Author Tom Perrotta, who wrote the original novel the film is based on, serves as an executive producer. Original director Alexander Payne is also back on board to direct Tracy Flick Can’t Win. Payne helmed the first installment and co-wrote the script with Jim Taylor, who’s also back to co-write the screenplay for the sequel.

Tracy Flick Can’t Win is also based on Perrotta’s novel of the same name, which was the follow-up to the 1998 book and published earlier this year. As the book serves as the source material for the film, it gives us an idea about what the plot will entail. In the book, Tracy Flick is now working as an assistant principal at a New Jersey high school and sees an opportunity to move up when the current principal retires. This puts the wheels in motion for Tracy to prove herself to be electable once again, though her quest to become the new principal is not without its challenges and interruptions that come from having a 10-year-old daughter, a needy doctor boyfriend, and a burgeoning meditation practice.

Tracy Flick Is Back

Released in 1999, Election took place when Tracy was still in high school with Witherspoon starring in the role alongside Matthew Broderick as her social studies teacher, Jim McAllister. With Tracy hoping to be elected student government president, Jim attempts to sabotage her candidacy. The film also starred Chris Klein, Jessica Campbell, Phil Reeves, and Molly Hagan.

Election did not light the box office on fire, though it was met with widespread acclaim. This includes a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars while Witherspoon was also up for a Best Actress Golden Globe Award. Its critical score at Rotten Tomatoes is a rather high 92% fresh, and for what it’s worth, director Alexander Payne has said that the movie is considered to be former president Barack Obama’s favorite political film.
