Resident Alien was a surprise hit Syfy original programming when its pilot season launched early last year. It received considerable fanfare for the humble cable channel, scoring an impressive 94% certified fresh of review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. So it was no surprise to see the series renewed for a second season which is due to air across America on January 26th.
Ahead of the impending release, a new trailer has dropped just in time to offer fans a glimpse at what shenanigans to expect from the latest season. The series comes from Chris Sheridan, who is best known for his time as a writer for Family Guy in the show’s seminal seasons. Sheridan was on staff up until the first cancellation of the show in 2003 and then returned for the revival penning some memorable early episodes, including the direct to DVD movie, Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
The story of Resident Alien centers on Hah Re (although in the series his name is referred to as unpronounceable), an Alien who crash lands on Earth and assumes the identity of Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, played by Alan Tudyk (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story). Hah Re is sent on a mission to destroy all humans, but when his craft is shot down, he is forced to blend in with human society using the aide of his empathic powers. While on Earth, he learns to laugh, love and the usual human fare, bringing him at direct odds with completing his mission.
SPOILER ALERT!
By the end of season one, fans were left with many unanswered questions and loose plot threads. Dr. Vanderspeigle had already made significant progress in becoming human, thanks in large part to his new friend Asta (Sara Tomko). In the final episode, Hah Re abandons his plans for annihilation to save Asta and Max (Judah Prehn) and Darcy (Alice Wetterlund) blows his cover by discovering the body of the original Dr. Vanderspeigle, who was himself revealed to be a murder.
Based on the trailer, season 2 looks to up the stakes slightly and expand the threat beyond the alien hunters tracking Hah Re down. With his mission now in tatters, Hah Re learns that his race has not abandoned its mission of wiping out the human race. With a new goal in mind, he sets out to make the necessary preparations to protect his close group of friends that now share his secret.
The trailer also promises more wackiness and the classic fish-out-of-water hijinks that the comic series is best known for. The second season of Resident Alien will be available to watch on Syfy from January 26th.
