Among the many celebrity cameos in Glass Onion, beloved actor Hugh Grant’s appearance as the partner of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc is one that gained a lot of attention from audiences. While the appearance was short, Grant’s turn had many fans questioning whether they would see more of the character in Knives Out 3. Writer-director Rian Johnson has now addressed the possibility of Grant reprising his role in a greater capacity in the third movie in the franchise. He told Netflix’s TUDUM blog:

“I will say this, first of all, I should only be so lucky to get that actor back in a murder mystery. So we’ll see. But I also feel like, if that happens, it would be way down the line because I feel like it’s important to set the guardrails. And the guardrails for me are that each one of these is about the mystery. It’s not about the detective. It’s not about diving into who he is or where he comes from. He can’t be the protagonist of it … It has to be centered around the mystery. And the detective is only interesting in terms of the role that he plays and the story that we’re telling. Look, I don’t know, man, I’m also a liar … And if something makes me laugh, I’ll inevitably do it at some point. So we’ll see.”

Hugh Grant’s Glass Onion Appearance Revealed Benoit Blanc’s Sexuality

Prior to the release of Glass Onion, the Knives Out franchise had not revealed much about Daniel Craig’s Detective Blanc’s personal life. This is something that Rian Johnson purposely did, and as he stated, he did not want to make the movie about its central detective but about the crime he was investigating. However, the brief appearance of Hugh Grant gave fans a small insight into Blanc’s home life, something that Johnson has now spoken more about. He said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

There is certainly potential for Hugh Grant to make another appearance in the Knives Out franchise, although fans shouldn’t expect to see much time spent on Blanc’s personal living arrangements. With Knives Out 3 currently being written, it will be at least next year before Daniel Craig, and potentially Hugh Grant, return to screens as part of another murder mystery case.

“They’re a couple. His name is Phillip. I just basically thought who would it give me the most joy for Benoit Blanc to be with, and I thought Hugh Grant. He was such a joy to be with, he came to set for one day, did that one disconnected scene, and trusted us to put it in the movie. I also love that he’s home baking, trying to make sourdough bread. I don’t know if I see him as the Watson to Blanc’s Sherlock, but it’s good to have separate things, plus that apartment is so nice, I can’t imagine Blanc can afford it so I think he has a real job.”

Glass Onion and Knives Out are currently streaming on Netflix.
