The Star Wars sequel trilogy was massively divisive among fans of the long-running franchise. Of the three movies, The Last Jedi became the most criticized among them, and director Rian Johnson took a lot of the heat for it. However, when it comes to his experience on the movie, it seems that Johnson’s biggest frustration was how the film was perceived as bad, despite critics praising it.
In a new interview with The New Yorker, Johnson was discussing Glass Onion, his Knives Out sequel, but the subject of Star Wars inevitably came up. Johnson was asked whether his Star Wars experience had been tarnished by the backlash, and the director said:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“Oh, f–k yeah. Yeah. My God. Yeah. In terms of that, I think I love Star Wars even more now. I think what actually frustrates me is people’s perception that I had a negative experience somehow, or people’s perception that it was somehow a traumatic experience, or something. The reality is that it was a completely joyful experience even through the back end of it, the past few years, the reception of it. No. And, when I read what those people were actually saying, I was, like, ‘Oh, I completely disagree with this.’ They’re wrong. For me. Everybody can like whatever they want and not like what they want. And Star Wars fans, in particular—growing up as one, arguing about other people’s opinions being wrong is sort of the bread and butter of it all. I didn’t feel crushed. Like, ‘Oh, no, I didn’t make a real Star Wars movie.’ I felt, like, ‘No, I did.’”
Will Rian Johnson Return To Make Another Star Wars Movie?
What seems like a long time ago, in a report far, far away, Rian Johnson was announced to be developing a new trilogy of Star Wars movies. However, whether those movies still go ahead is a little up in the air despite the director being pretty optimistic about the possibility of his return to the franchise at some point. Speaking to Variety previously, Johnson said:
Of course, Glass Onion is expected to be a big hit for Johnson and his ensemble Knives Out sequel, which is once again led by Daniel Craig. With the director already working on the third Knives Out movie, it could be quite some time before he could commit the amount of time needed to a Star Wars movie. Adding to Johnson’s recent comments that he sees Knives Out as a franchise that could take a leaf from crime writer Agatha Christie’s page and have limitless sequels, his return to the galaxy far, far away seems to be getting longer and longer away.
“I have talked to Kathy [Kathleen Kennedy] about it, and we’re still talking about it,” he explains. “I had such an amazing experience making The Last Jedi. It’s entirely a matter of scheduling. For me, putting this [Glass Onion] out and making the next one of these… the answer is I don’t know.”
