With Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery now available on Netflix, filmmaker Rian Johnson is starting to piece together the next mystery for Detective Benoit Blanc to solve. Following the original Knives Out, which hit theaters in 2019, Johnson signed a lucrative deal with Netflix to develop two sequels alongside returning star Daniel Craig. One half of that deal has now been honored, and as Johnson tells Wired, he’s now officially started on Knives Out 3.
“It’s such a weird time right now because I’m just starting to work on writing the next mystery movie, and it’ll be a few years before it comes out and God only knows what the landscape’s gonna look like at that point,” Johnson says of the threequel, hopeful it will be able to play in more theaters. “I feel like trying to guess where we’re gonna be next is maybe a fool’s errand.”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
While Glass Onion is getting watched by most through Netflix, it had also been given a limited theatrical run in select theaters. That was important for Johnson, who says he designed the film to be best enjoyed on the big screen, even if that wasn’t how it was seen by most viewers upon its release. The director says that the fun elements and the whodunit aspect of these movies make them ideal to be watched with others in a theater for a shared experience.
“It’s very, very important to me. And with the Benoit Blanc movies, what’s fun about making them is really trying to do the Hitchcock thing of playing the audience like a piano,” he says. “So just standing in the back of theaters and watching Glass Onion play with crowds, it’s been such an exhilarating experience. It’s like a drug.”
On what he hopes is the future of movies, he added, “My hope is theatrical. My hope is that however it happens, that theatrical will find a way to come back and kind of solidify and find its form in the culture. I feel like it’s something that people still want.”
