You can now head to Netflix to find Rian Johnson’s newest movie, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and while the filmmaker is happy for people to see the film, he really wishes it wasn’t called that. Previously, Johnson wrote and directed 2019’s Knives Out, introducing Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc. The sleuth is back in Glass Onion, which is what Johnson wanted the movie to be officially titled before Netflix added A Knives Out Mystery as its subtitle.

Speaking about the title in a new interview with The Atlantic, Johnson says he fought for the film to be simply called Glass Onion. Of course, the idea was for the sequel to stand on its own, as beyond the return of Craig as Benoit Blanc, Glass Onion boasts a standalone story with an all-new cast of characters. As Johnson told the publication, Netflix adding the subtitle has left him feeling pretty agitated.

“I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained. Honestly, I’m p*ssed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title. You know? I want it to just be called Glass Onion. I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time. But there’s a gravity of a thousand suns toward serialized storytelling.”

In the sequel, a new mystery begins when a tech billionaire hosts a murder mystery weekend at his Greek island. Johnson also explained how Glass Onion needed to be completely different from Knives Out, and that began with the setting. He started with the idea of doing a destination mystery, but knew he needed to come up with a story that was solid beyond the whodunit aspects on the surface.

The film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Daniel Craig joined by Hugh Grant, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.
