It’s been years since Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy was announced; however, work on the films has been inching along at a plodding pace. Johnson first dove into the galaxy far, far away in 2017 with Star Wars: Episode VIII -The Last Jedi, which was perhaps the most divisive entry in the long-running franchise.

Nevertheless, there is still quite a bit of excitement surrounding his involvement with Star Wars, and fans have eagerly anticipated any news they could get from Johnson. The filmmaker recently appeared on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, where he gave a brief update on the status of the long-awaited trilogy. But, unfortunately, scheduling seems to be the main issue surrounding the projects.

“I have talked to Kathy [Kathleen Kennedy] about it, and we’re still talking about it,” he explains. “I had such an amazing experience making The Last Jedi. It’s entirely a matter of scheduling. For me, putting this [Glass Onion] out and making the next one of these… the answer is I don’t know.” Luckily, he still has a passion for the project. When asked whether he believes audiences will eventually see his trilogy on the big screen, he says, “God I hope so.” For now, fans will have to wait and see if his plans ever come to fruition.

Rian Johnson is Busy for the Foreseeable Future

Rian Johnson introduced a fantastic series of whodunits with the first installment of Knives Out in 2019. The film, featuring an ensemble cast, including Daniel Craig, Ana De Armas, and Jamie Lee Curtis, was a smash hit with audiences and the box office. Netflix would acquire the rights to two sequels, with the upcoming Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery nearly ready for release.

When Variety asked Johnson how many sequels he would be up for in the Knives Out universe, his answer was essentially limitless. “If each one of these can really be what Agatha Christie did, if it can be not just in a totally new location and a new cast, but also trying something exciting,” Johnson explains. “I’ll keep doing it as long as Daniel [Craig] and I are having a good time. I’ll keep making these as long as they let me.”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is set to release in theaters for one week, from Nov. 23 to Nov. 29, before arriving on Netflix for the world premiere on Dec. 23. Then, Johnson will begin work on the third film in the franchise, which will be years away from a release. Unfortunately for Star Wars fans, Johnson’s trilogy is still far, far away.
