After the recent release of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, fans may be wondering what will be coming next for Detective Benoit Blanc. With Glass Onion, the idea of having the Daniel Craig-played character investigating a new mystery carried over, but the film was otherwise very different compared to the original Knives Out. We can presume director Rian Johnson will be wanting other installments of the series to feel unique as well, which could explain why he’s not a fan of adding “A Knives Out Mystery” to Glass Onion’s official title.
In any case, while Johnson is starting to put some ideas together for Knives Out 3, he’s seemingly putting his support behind the idea of a holiday special, similar to the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special or the more recent Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. When one person on Twitter pitched the idea of a holiday special for Benoit Blanc, Johnson responded in all capital letters, “OH SH*T.” It would seem, based on this response, that the concept is one that Johnson hadn’t yet thought of but is now excited about. Could that be what he ends up doing with Knives Out 3? It’s still early enough in the threequel’s production to make that decision, after all.

“It’s such a weird time right now because I’m just starting to work on writing the next mystery movie, and it’ll be a few years before it comes out and God only knows what the landscape’s gonna look like at that point,” Johnson recently said of progress on part 3. “I feel like trying to guess where we’re gonna be next is maybe a fool’s errand.”
What Will Happen in Knives Out 3?
Disney/Netflix
Johnson is apparently taking suggestions on where to go for the next Knives Out film, and some of them are a bit out there. The idea of crossing over Benoit Blanc with The Muppets is one that sounds bizarre at first, but Johnson admits does have him intrigued.
“It’s a joke that I thought was pretty brilliant, and I ended up really giving [it] some serious thought," Johnson said, via Tudum. “As much as I take the murder mystery genre seriously, I take the genre of a Muppet movie seriously… I think those two things have very different rules. You can either have a Benoit Blanc mystery that has Muppets in it, but they’ll feel out of place. Or you can have a Muppet movie that Benoit Blanc is in, but it’ll feel like a Muppet movie.”
