The voice cast consists of Justin Roiland as Rick and Morty, Sarah Chalke as Beth, Chris Parnell as Jerry, Spencer Grammer as Summer. The fifth season of Rick and Morty premiered back in June 2021, and once again consisted of ten episodes. A seventh season has been confirmed to already be in development, with Rick and Morty having been previously renewed for as many as 70 episodes, which are to be spread out over an undetermined number of seasons. A season that will seemingly be released whenever Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland feel like it.
Justin Roiland Has Promised That Rick & Morty Season 6 Will Be More Canonical
Warner Bros. Television Distribution
Rick and Morty has become known for creating major threats, crucial characters, and important plot points…before dropping them entirely and instead exploring matters such as Rick and his private toilet. Not referring to its canon has frustrated some fans, with Roiland and Harmon clearly taking notice as some of the more recent outings have brought things back that fans have wanted to see for some time. Particularly with the finale of season 5, which saw the return of Evil Morty, who unveils a new world before jumping into a yellow portal using his own portal gun.
Whether Evil Morty will be back again is unknown, though the trailer for season 6 does appear to show Morty using a similar yellow portal gun…
Speaking with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con, Roiland assured fans that Rick and Morty Season 6 will be more canonical and reward those waiting for certain elements to be referenced. “I will say that it’s a bit more canonical,” Roiland said. “It really rewards fans of the show that have been watching up to this point… So it’s like, I think we’re kind of finally back into the rhythm of Rick and Morty, and I think Season 6 is… I didn’t particularly think Season 5 was bad, but Season 6 is fg amazing. It really is a fg quality season.” Evidently, Roiland was disappointed with season 5, which did not play out as he had wanted due to the passing of a longtime friend and line producer J. Michael Mendel.
Rick and Morty Season 6 returns starting September 4 on [adult swim]. The first five seasons of Rick and Morty are available now on HBO Max.
