Rihanna is an international phenomenon, being one of the biggest names in music and owning a fashion empire that is ever-expanding. She has an effortlessly cool aura, which is evident in everything that she does, and this also extends to her work as an actor. Indeed, it’s not uncommon for singers to become actors, dipping their toes in film and TV work on-screen. In a way, a singer’s persona onstage serves as a natural foundation for acting.

Home tells the story of a girl named Tip, voiced by Rihanna, who is hiding from aliens that have invaded earth. On a mission to relocate the human population, Tip ventures to find her mom, and, along the way, meets a fugitive called Oh (Jim Parsons), and the two become unlikely friends. From DreamWorks Animation, Home was released in 2015 and was directed by Tim Johnson. The movie demonstrates Rihanna’s ability to shine onscreen even when she is acting with a voice role.

4 Battleship

Battleship was directed by Peter Berg and is a film based on the popular board game of the same name. The film follows Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch), who is an officer on board the destroyer USS John Paul Jones, while his older brother, Stone (played by Alexander Skarsgård) is the commanding officer of the USS Sampson. They must face against alien invaders who have arrived on Earth and plan to steal the planet’s resources. Rihanna has a fairly large role as Officer Weps, and we see her in action against the aliens. It’s one of her earliest larger movie roles, and it’s well worth a watch.

3 Valerian

Valerian was released in 2017 and tells the story of titular Valerian (played Dane DeHaan) who works to maintain order in the human territories of the 28th Century. Valerian embarks on a mission to Alpha, a metropolis that faces a large threat when a dark force enters the city. Rihanna plays Bubble, whom we are introduced to when she performs a burlesque dance with several costume changes until she changes to her true form, which is that of a gloopy alien. She brings a depth to the role when we understand she is forced to perform due to being captured. Rihanna makes the smaller role much more significant.

2 Bates Motel

Bates Motel is a psychological horror drama series that aired from 2013-2017, serving as a prequel to the famous Alfred Hitchcock film, Psycho, which has been a huge reference point for culture since it was released in 1960. The series features Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates and Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates, his mother. Bates Motel is loosely based on the Hitchcock film, and Rihanna stars as the iconic Marion Crane, recreating the famous shower scene with a modern twist. Rihanna blends in well with the cast and brings a new life to the beloved character. In fact, Vanity Fair wrote of Rihanna’s performance: “The singer may have played Marion Crane, but she had a different story to tell.”

Ocean’s 8 was directed by Gary Ross and features an ensemble, all-star cast including: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, and Helena Bonham Carter. The film follows a group of women as they embark on a huge-scale heist like none of them have ever embarked on before. Rihanna plays a hacker called Nine Ball, and she brings an effortlessly cool flare to the role.
