Rings Of Power Star Hopes For More Casting Diversity In Season 2

While speaking to Variety, Córdova said that he hopes that what was started in the first season of The Rings of Power continues to be seen over the rest of the show. He added that seeing the amount of people who have reacted to his character has made him feel that the representation of the series has a “big movement” behind it. He said:

While the majority of the cast for season 2 of The Rings of Power will remain the same as the first season, there will also be a number of new characters to be introduced into the world this version of Tolkien’s Middle Earth is building. With that comes plenty of opportunities to fill the cast with the right people for the roles, regardless of race or color.

“I think this is the beginning. I think we would be remiss to not do that - to stop there. There’s so much love and people cosplaying as Arondir, sending love, making fan art and saying, ‘We’re here for you. We see the negativity, but we’re gonna flood your inbox with positivity.’ This has changed history, and there is a big movement behind this.”

The Rings of Power came under fire from certain corners of the internet for casting actors such as Lenny Henry in prominent roles, with some suggesting it broke Tolkien canon and others simply not wanting to accept that Black actors could appear in Tolkien’s world. However, the vast majority were more than happy with the casting, and the show in general as in depth reviews of the show revealed. However, there were also many negative ratings given to the series on sites like Rotten Tomatoes, but never with much of a reason behind why they believed the series to be so bad.

All in all, the Prime Video audience numbers spoke for themselves, and the series was never going to live or die on one season anyway. With a long way to go to tell the story The Rings of Power has set out will take a number of further seasons, and that is something that its fans will be hoping will be allowed to continue on and not face the ax.

The Rings of Power certainly doesn’t seem to have any intention of changing up its model going forward when it comes to casting. Even though small changes to Tolkien’s world may have disgruntled some, there were plenty who have been more than happy with the series’ direction, and are now awaiting the next season, which is not expected to arrive until 2024 at the earliest.
