Veteran actress Rita Moreno is appalled that the United States Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, ending constitutional protection for abortion in the country. This news was immediately met with widespread backlash, garnering immense criticism from those left shocked and disappointed by the decision. Many celebrities have been using their platforms to speak out against this move, and as someone who remembers feeling “jubilant” when Roe v. Wade was first put into law nearly five decades ago, Moreno is especially unhappy and fearful for the future.
Per Variety, Moreno had once become pregnant while in a relationship with actor Marlon Brando. At the time, Brando had organized a doctor to privately provide an abortion. After returning home, Moreno continued to bleed and sought further treatment at an actual hospital. It was there she learned that the abortion hadn’t been done properly and that she very well could have died from the botched procedure.

The 90-year-old actress has gotten to see this thing happen from both sides. With Roe v. Wade getting overturned, Moreno now is concerned that those kinds of procedures will be making a return. She says that she feels “depressed” thinking about what will happen in the future as a result, but at the same time, Moreno also says she’s not exactly surprised.
Even at 90, Moreno is not showing any signs of slowing down with her acting career. After appearing in a Steven Spielberg movie last year, her second time starring in a West Side Story adaptation, it was announced that Moreno will join the Fast and Furious franchise by playing Vin Diesel’s grandmother in Fast X. She is attached to several other upcoming projects as well with roles in the horror comedy The Prank, the animated feature My Father’s Dragon, and the sports comedy 80 for Brady. Moreno also provides voices for Netflix’s new animated series adaptation of Green Eggs and Ham.
“I can see that thing happening now and going back to back alleys. I’m really nervous and frightened and horrified that this is taking place. I can’t believe that some of those people are telling us what to do with our bodies… Hillary Clinton warned everybody about this. I’m not shocked because I saw it coming but I’m stunned. I think about the young girls. Taking it to the most extreme, girls who get pregnant because of rape or incest. Unfair isn’t a strong enough word, but it’s unfair."
