Riverdale’s seventh season will be its final, TVLine has reported. It is the latest series cancelation from the network, joining Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, Naomi, Legacies, Dynasty, Charmed, Roswell, New Mexico, In The Dark, and 4400. Riverdale stars KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, the series narrator. The show was renewed for its final season this past March.
Developed for television by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Riverdale is based on Archie Comics characters living in the titular town. The CW series presented a much darker version of the comics, beginning with the mystery of a classmate’s unsolved homicide. The series plot has also included sex, drugs, a romantic student-teacher relationship, and deceit. At its start, the series was compared to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.

Riverdale was a great success for the network, and the show’s popularity only increased when it became available to stream on Netflix. It is considered one of the streamer’s most popular shows worldwide. It is rumored that the CW is up for sale and that upcoming negotiations may be the cause for the number of series cancelations.
Aguirre-Sacasa executive-produces alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater. Riverdale is produced by Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, in association with Berlanti Productions. The show began in 2017 and Season 6 is currently airing Sundays at 8/7c. Season 7 is scheduled to air sometime in 2023. There have been over 100 episodes to date.

Riverdale’s popularity has expanded its reach with two shows based on the famous comics and featuring crossovers with Riverdale characters. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, based on Archie Comics teen witch Sabrina Spellman (played by Kiernan Shipka), kicked off its first season in March 2018. Initially set to join the CW family, the show was moved to Netflix before its pilot episode aired. That episode, which critics and audiences both received positively, was written by Aguirre-Sacasa and directed by Lee Toland Krieger.
Sabrina lives in the fictional town of Greendale which is referenced in Riverdale’s second season. The series was canceled in July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but a comic book series continuation The Occult World of Sabrina was announced shortly after.
Katy Keene is also part of the Archie Comics and Riverdale universe. It was developed by Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi and starred Lucy Hale as Katy Keene, Ashleigh Murray (reprising her role of Josie from Riverdale), Camille Hyde and Jonny Beauchamp.
Set in New York City, the series followed the life of a group of artist friends trying to make it big. The comedy often featured musical numbers. Katy Keene, an aspiring fashion designer, appeared on an episode of Riverdale in 2020 and actors Robin Givens, Casey Cott and Marck Consuelos, all of who appear on Riverdale, make guest appearances on Katy Keene.
Katy Keene aired on the CW and was canceled after one season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
