Rob Delaney has become the latest actor to board season six of Charlie Brooker’s sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror. Originally airing on UK’s Channel 4, the show became one of Netflix’s most successful international hits since the streaming started airing episodes for its third, fourth, and fifth seasons. A Black Mirror film has also been released. Entitled Bandersnatch, it was an interactive film involving timed choices and multiple endings.

Delaney, an Emmy-nominated comedian, is probably best known for starring opposite Sharon Horgan in Channel 4’s Catastrophe. There he plays Rob Norris, a single man who has a one-night stand while on a brief business trip to London, which results in the woman he meets becoming pregnant. Besides that, he also starred in Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation of The Power while also being in the Lionsgate/Roadside feature The Good House. He has also written a memoir about the death of his son entitled A Heart that Works.

Actors that specifically appeared during season five were Andrew Scott, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Miley Cyrus. Several of the actors have been Britsh, befitting the show’s country of origin, but the show’s had plenty of other nationalities as well.

Delaney is only one of several newcomers to the show. Other actors that have been announced for Black Mirror season six are Zazie Beetz, Paapa Esssiedu, Josh Hartnett, Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, Danny Ramierez, Clara Rugaard, Auden Thornton, and Anjana Vasan. It’s also been announced that Salma Hayek and Annie Murphy will appear as well, in addition to Myha’la Herrold and Rory Culkin.

The Show and Its Production

Each episode tells a contained story reflecting technological side effects or social issues, often set in the near future with a dystopian style. Despite broadly falling under the genre of science fiction, the show has branched out into multiple genres, some serious, some more lighthearted. For instance, there have been episodes about a post-apocalyptic future where humanity is being hunted to extinction by an army of robotic dogs and finding love during what appears to be the ‘80s.

The latest season of Black Mirror, which has recently entered production, will be the first from Booker’s new Netflix-backed Broke & Bones, an outfit which he runs with Annabel Jones, a Black Mirror exec. Previously Netflix had invested in the new production outfit that would see it take complete control of the company for around $100M, a first-of-its-kind deal for the streamer in the UK.

The sixth season of the show has been a long time coming. Back at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brooker said that he was busy doing other things, specifically revisiting his comedic skill set, because he did not think that people would be able to stomach stories about society falling apart at that time. So instead, he worked on two Netflix mockumentaries, Death to 2020 and its sequel, Death to 2021.
